Together we climb | Pikia To Tatou Maunga

Nau mai haere mai
Welcome to Pirongia School!

Pirongia school has a long history, having been founded in 1873. We are set to celebrate our 150th anniversary next year. We have large and beautiful grounds, studded with ancient trees and including an adventure playground, a magnificent L-shaped 25 metre pool, spacious playing fields, two astro-turf courts, generous sealed areas, a large hall, a music suite, a hard materials room, soft materials learning space, STEM room and a well-resourced library. Our classrooms are well presented and well resourced.  Wow!

As a BYOD school, students from Y5-8 can enhance their learning by accessing the digital world.

The mountain, which gives its name to the school and the village, is very much part of the psyche of the school. Pirongia- te- aroaro-o- Kahu, its full name in English 'the scented presence of Kahu' remembers the Tainui female ancestor Kahu, overcoming difficulties in her climbing of our mountain. The mountain therefore stands tall as a reminder of the challenges we face in our learning and how we must take pride in the many different journeys to our individual summits.

Our learning teams are called; Rata (year 0 to 2), Tawa (year 3 and 4), Kahikatea (year 5 and 6) and Kawaka (year 7 and 8). Our teams at our school are named after the trees found on our maunga. Each team has a graduate profile which captures the skills, knowledge and competencies their graduates take with them as they progress up the school.

Our house groups are named after the birds found on our maunga. Our house competitions build community spirit and help students gain an sense of belonging through social interaction and bonding.  Our house groups are called; Tui, Kiwi, Kakapo and Kea.
